Embodied Resilience

Every day, we are faced with various challenges that can take a toll on our mental, emotional, and physical well-being. From work stress to financial struggles, dealing with family issues, and everything in between, it can sometimes feel like there is no escape from the chaos of everyday life. This can be especially true for folx who often face unique challenges such as systemic racism, microaggressions, and the struggle of being a part of a marginalized community. Let’s discuss some ways we can decompress and find inner peace amidst the trials and tribulations of life.

“Peace is costly, but it is worth the expense.”

-African Proverb

Self-Reflection

Taking time to reflect on your thoughts and emotions can be a powerful tool in releasing pent-up stress and anxiety. Set aside some time each day to meditate, journal, or simply sit in silence and allow your mind to wander. This can help you tune into your inner self and gain clarity on the root of your stressors.

Movement

Exercise has been proven time and time again to be an effective stress reliever. Even something as simple as a daily walk or yoga session can help release endorphins to improve your mood and combat negative emotions. It can be helpful to find an activity you enjoy and make it a part of your routine.

Set Boundaries

Learning to say no is a vital part of self-care. You cannot be all things to all people, and it's important to prioritize your own well-being. Set clear boundaries with co-workers, family, and friends, and stick to them. This is a gentle reminder that it's okay to put yourself first.

Seek & Accept Support

It takes a village. Talking to a trusted friend or family member about what you're going through can help alleviate stress and anxiety. You may even consider seeking support through therapy to discuss your feelings in a safe and confidential space. Seeking therapy is not a sign of weakness, and it can be the first step towards healing and growth.

Self-Care & Grace

Perhaps one of the most challenging aspects of self-care is showing yourself compassion. It's easy to get caught up in self-criticism and negative self-talk, but this only perpetuates feelings of stress and anxiety. Instead, practice self-compassion by acknowledging your strengths and accomplishments, forgiving yourself for mistakes, and treating yourself with kindness and understanding.
